More than 19 miles of the 25-mile long Ankeny to Woodward Trail has been finish. Now that these trail sections are built, a segment less than five miles in length, including the half-mile long Des Moines River Bridge crossing, will be all that remains for trail completion. The ten organizations involved in trail development continue to seek grants and financial support for this portion of the trail. Polk County Public Works, with support from Polk County Conservation, is overseeing trail construction. Snyder & Associates, Inc. of Ankeny provided trail design. The trail is being constructed on an old Union Pacific rail bed. This project has been in development for nearly six years. The total value of the trail and Des Moines River Bridge, when completed, is estimated at nearly $14 million. Much of the support for this trail has been provided thus far from the federal government, state government, and Union Pacific Railroad. Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) along with the nine government agencies involved has also contributed both dollars and in-kind support for the trail. More than 100 individuals have also supported the trail with donations. The organizations developing this trail include (in alphabetical order): City of Ankeny, Boone County Conservation, Dallas County Conservation, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, City of Madrid, Polk County Conservation and Public Works, City of Sheldahl, City of Slater, Story County and City of Woodward. |
