City Parks

Edgewood Park – West 8th and Main Streets

Located on the south edge of Madrid, Edgewood Park is a large park with many large shade trees, both enclosed and open shelters, public restrooms, playground equipment, and a variety of sports facilities. Edgewood Park is undergoing a major expansion, adding additional needed sports facilities to accommodate the large number of sports activities available to Madrid’s young people.

Jensen Park – 3rd and Main Streets

Jensen Park is a small jewel-like park next to City Hall. It contains a gazebo that can be used for small events, playground equipment for young children, beautiful gardens, large shade trees, benches, and a drinking fountain

High Trestle Trail - Hwy 17 south of 3rd Street

The High Trestle Trail is a linear park and transportation corridor that links Madrid to Woodward to the west, and Slater, Sheldahl , and Ankeny to the east, as well as linking to a network of trails in central Iowa. Parking is available at the Johnson Family Trailhead at Dalander Park.

Dalander Park – Hwy 17 south of 3rd Street

Dalander Park is one of Madrid’s newest parks. Formerly a piece of agricultural land, the city acquired the property with assistance from the Iowa REAP program and a generous donation from the descendants of the Dalander family, one of Madrid’s founding families. The upper area of the park contains the new Johnson Family Trailhead, which was developed to serve the needs of High Trestle Trail users. The lower part of the park has been seeded to a diverse mix of prairie plants, including a high proportion of prairie flowers, and will be maintained for the enjoyment, education, and recreation of Madrid-area residents.

Johnson Family Trailhead – Hwy 17 south of 3rd Street

The Johnson Family Trailhead is contained within Dalander Park and is being developed to contain parking facilities, including accessible parking, primarily for the High Trestle Trail. Restroom facilities are expected to be constructed in 2011.

MAC Park – West 2nd and State Streets

This new park is under development by the Madrid Action Committee with help from Boy Scout Wyatt Carpenter, who chose this as his Eagle Scout project. It will contain bicycle parking facilities to serve the downtown area.

Veterans’ Park – Hwy 17 near Peterson Parkway

Veteran’s Park was the inspiration of Reuben Peterson, a decorated World War II veteran, to honor America’s veterans. Reuben worked with the Madrid Home to develop the park on the north side of Madrid just south of the Cedars assisted living facility.
