SUBJECT: BURGLARY SUSPECT ARRESTED IN PLEASANTVILLE

The suspect in the burglary to the Madrid VFW that occurred on February 13th was arrested on a Madrid arrest warrant by the Pleasantville Police on Wednesday, March 7th.

According to Madrid Police Chief Tim Brown, 24 year old Matthew Lee Moore of 710 NE 9th Street, Ankeny was arrested on the Highway 5 by-pass just outside Pleasantville at approximately 4 am on March 7th.   Moore was stopped for a simple traffic violation by Pleasantville Police Chief Alan Bailey.  After the stop Bailey ran a routine warrants check and determined that Moore was wanted for the Madrid burglary.

Bailey said that when he pulled in behind the vehicle, Moore began to drive in a suspicious manner.  When Moore made a turn from the wrong lane, Bailey stopped the vehicle to investigate.  Coincidently, it was only by chance that Bailey was even out that early in the day.  Bailey’s fiancé had been unexpectedly called to work.  Since he was awake anyway, he decided to put his uniform on and patrol.  A short time later he spotted Moore’s vehicle.  “I’d rather be lucky than good” Bailey said, referring to his chance meeting with a wanted felon.

After his arrest in Pleasantville, Moore was transported to the Marion County Jail in Knoxville where he was held until Chief Brown and Madrid Officer Zach Zeutenhorst picked him up later that day.  Moore was transported to Boone by Brown and Zeutenhorst and is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.

SUBJECT: POLICE TAKE ON RESCUE DUTIES DURING STORM

Because of last week’s storm, Madrid police officers found themselves playing a roll that they weren’t used to.  Instead of patrolling the streets and fighting crime, they were kept busy rescuing stranded motorists from snow banks and drifts on the roads outside the city.

Over a dozen vehicles, form sedans to semis, were stranded between Madrid and Luther on Highway 17.  Some of the vehicles had slid off into the ditches but many of them were stranded in the traffic lanes after getting stuck in large drifts.  By mid morning Friday Highway 17 was littered with cars, drifted over with snow, reducing some stretches of the highway to only one lane.

Weather conditions were so severe that the police departments rear wheel sedans were useless in getting to the stranded motorists.  Police Sergeant Dallas Wingate parked his patrol car late Thursday night and rescued two stranded motorists south of Luther in his personally owned 4 wheel drive pickup truck.  Eventually officers borrowed the Fire Departments 4 wheel drive Chevy Suburban for patrol and rescue duties.

Throughout the late night hours of Thursday through the afternoon hours of Friday Sergeant Wingate, Madrid Police Officers Zach Zeutenhorst and Bryan Olmstead and Boone County Deputy Brian Pontius drove through blizzard conditions, checking on vehicles that had become stranded.  Some of the people they contacted preferred to stay with their vehicles while others chose to have the officers take them to the Madrid Home where staff had set up an emergency shelter. Eight stranded motorists were taken to the Madrid Home where they were provided free meals and a place to sleep if they wished.  For those drivers who stayed with their vehicles or who had help coming, Officer Olmstead delivered box lunches from the Madrid Home and bottled water.

By mid afternoon on Friday the situation on Highway 17 had become so bad that two State DOT snowplows became stranded in the snow just north of the high school.  The snowplows were rescued by a Boone County Secondary Roads maintainer that pulled them out of the road.  By Saturday most of the vehicles had been towed off the highway and out of the ditches and the road was clear of both vehicle and the snow by Monday morning.

SUSPECT IDENTIFIED IN VFW BURGLARY

The Madrid Police have identified a 24 year old Ankeny man as the person they believe is responsible for burglarizing the VFW two weeks ago.  An arrest warrant was issued on Monday afternoon for Matthew Lee Moore for Burglary in the 3rd Degree, a class D felony.

Police believe that on the morning of February 13th, Moore broke into the VFW with the intent to steal beer, cigarettes, food and money but was forced to run from the building when an employee showed up for work.  Witnesses in the area saw Moore flee the area in a Chevrolet Blazer and got the license plate number and reported it to the police.  Police were led to the owner of the Blazer, who told police that Moore had borrowed the vehicle.  Police showed Moore’s photograph to witnesses in a photo line-up and he was identified as the individual who ran from the back of the VFW.  Evidence collected at the scene as well as a subsequent search warrant indicated that Moore may have been involved in as many as 18 other burglaries in Boone, Dallas, Polk and Story Counties.

On Monday afternoon, police from Madrid, Ankeny and the Polk County Sheriff’s Department attempted to locate Moore at an address outside Polk City as well as at his parents address in Ankeny but Moore was not at either address.  When found, Moore will be held on a $10,000 cash bond.

Authorities believe that others may have acted with Moore in the burglaries outside of the Madrid area and investigation into those burglaries continues.

LOCAL RESIDENTS PROVIDE LEADS IN BURGLARIES

Because of the vigilance of two local electricians and a bartender, law enforcement officials in Madrid, Boone, Story and Dallas Counties are closer to finding a burglary suspect that has plagued surrounding areas since the beginning of winter.

Curt Perkins of Madrid and Jeff Polich of Woodward, were pulling into the alley behind the VFW just before 8am on Tuesday, February 13th when they saw a man run from the rear of the VFW. At about the same time an employee of the bar, Virginia Morrison, ran out and yelled to Perkins that the man had burglarized the bar.  Perkins and Polich chased the man, who had gotten into a white Chevy Blazer, through the downtown area.  Perkins called 911 while Polich read the license plate off of the Blazer. The driver turned onto Highway 17 sped and sped out of town at a high rate of speed.

As Perkins was talking to one Boone County dispatcher the other dispatcher was in radio contact with Police Chief Tim Brown, who was just south of town.  Brown attempted to catch up to the vehicle which had turned east on 340th Street, but the vehicle had a one to two minute lead and was never located.

According to police, Morrison came to work and noticed that the area behind the bar had been ransacked.  At about the same time she saw a man run from the back room and up the stairs to the upper level of the VFW.  Morrison called 911, reported the burglary and opened the back delivery door just as Perkins and Polich, who work for Perkins Electric, were pulling in the alley to do some electrical work at the bar. Police believe the unidentified man entered the bar by prying open the upper rear door.   Once he got in he ransacked several rooms before Morrison came to work.  Although police believe he may have spent several hours in the building it appears that nothing was taken.  Police say that in his hurry to get away from Morrison he left behind items that they hope they can get fingerprints from.

Dozens of bars in Story, Polk and Dallas Counties have been burglarized by what police believe to be the same person or people.  Boot prints found at those burglaries matched ones found at the VFW connecting the Madrid burglary with those of the neighboring
